Breast Implant Revision
A breast implant revision can be done for a variety of medical and cosmetic reasons. Breast implant revision, also known as breast augmentation revision, is a surgical technique that involves removing and/or replacing breast implants to rectify issues that have arisen during breast augmentation or implant-based breast reconstruction surgery. Breast implant revision can also be used to fix an unsatisfactory outcome from one of the aforementioned procedures.
What is breast implant revision surgery and how does it work?
Replacement of existing breast implants with fresh implants is the purpose of breast implant revision surgery. While updating the implant material, the goal is frequently to change or improve the appearance of the breasts, which could include:
- A breast lift or reduction can be done at the same time.
- Repositioning the implant on the chest by reshaping the breast implant pocket
- The size, shape, or style of the breast implant can be increased or decreased.
Any of the following factors may contribute to a desire for breast implant revision surgery:
- a desire to alter the size of one’s breasts
- Capsular contracture causes pain.
- Concerns about implant rupture or migration
- Change from saline to silicone implants or try a different implant design
Breast implants and the surrounding breast tissue might alter form or size over time, giving the breast an appearance or feel that is less acceptable than the original result. Furthermore, while many breast implants have a lifetime warranty on the implant device, the costs of having surgery to repair the implants are no longer covered after ten years. As a result, many women will choose to replace or upgrade their breast implants after ten years or so.
Breast implant revision surgery is not a typical or normal process, and it must be customized to the patient’s individual needs and aspirations. As a result, this surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon who is well-trained and experienced in all types of breast surgery, as well as a surgeon who will listen to the patient’s goals and desires and develop a surgical plan that specifically addresses all of the issues at the time of surgery.

Implants are removed
Unrelated health concerns may occur in some patients, necessitating implant removal. The diagnosis of breast cancer, for example, is not associated to breast implants, although treatment of the disease may be more effective once the implants are removed.
Implant problems such as rupture, significant capsular contracture (hardening of the implants), or movement of the implant may necessitate its removal. Discomfort caused by breast implants (usually due to hardening or size) can sometimes be a sign that they should be removed with or without replacement.
Another factor driving breast implant revision, replacement, or removal is a change in lifestyle. A woman may simply decide that she no longer wants implants or that the size she chose does not satisfy her cosmetic goals. Whatever woman who is unhappy with her breast implants for any reason is a candidate for implant revision.
